Oldham County History Center
In LaGrange, the Oldham County History Center offers an immersive look at the region’s past, with a special focus on African American history and the Underground Railroad. As the only museum in Kentucky with two National Underground Railroad Network sites, it provides a powerful and personal perspective on history. The Henry Bibb Escapes/Gatewood Plantation site and the J. Chilton Library and Archives showcase rare documents that shed light on the local slave trade. At the Peyton Samuel Head Museum, exhibits highlight key abolitionists, African American Union soldiers, and the evolving Civil Rights Movement in Oldham County. Visitors can explore authentic letters, participate in guided tours, and even visit a historic African American cemetery just blocks away. With interactive programs and year-round tours, the History Center brings the past to life—offering stories of resilience and resistance that still resonate today.
