Churchill Downs/Kentucky Derby Museum

Discover the contributions of Black jockeys and trainers to the sport of Thoroughbred racing at this historic racetrack and museum in Louisville. Explore the Black Heritage in Racing exhibit, where you’ll meet the jockeys who dominated the early Derby days—over half of the first 28 Derbys were won by Black riders! Spot a program from the first-ever Kentucky Derby (won by a Black jockey in 1875) and learn about Isaac Murphy, one of the all-time great jockeys. The Guided Track Visit brings you up close to the infamous dirt track. Or take the Black Heritage in Racing Tour to hear stories about African American figures in Kentucky racing as you explore the historic racetrack. Visit on the first Saturday in May to witness the iconic Kentucky Derby in all its glory. It’s called the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” for a reason!

Accessibility: The Kentucky Derby Museum is fully accessible. The Guided Track Visit has one step up and down, and is wheelchair accessible. The Black Heritage in Racing Tour is not wheelchair accessible, as there are stairs in the historic racetrack.
