Farmington Historic Home
Once a historic hemp plantation, the Farmington Estate was home to the Speeds (one of Kentucky’s oldest families) and up to 60 enslaved individuals who worked there. Take a guided tour of the 1816 Federal-style home, with its unusual octagonal rooms and period furniture on display. Explore the formal gardens, stone springhouse and barn, cook’s quarters, and blacksmith shop on the grounds. Learn about Abraham Lincoln’s visit to the plantation and how it changed his views on slavery, and view writings from the Speed family and the enslaved residents who lived there. Be sure to check out the Memorial to the Enslaved at Farmington and the Visitor Center. Group tours can be pre-arranged upon request.
Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of Farmington, the entrance to the house is not wheelchair accessible due to steep stairs.
