The Seelbach Hotel

The Seelbach Hotel has attracted both the famous and the infamous since opening its doors in 1905. Legends of the Prohibition era were regulars here, including Al Capone and F. Scott Fitzgerald, who chose the hotel as the site of Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s wedding in The Great Gatsby.

Built by Bavarian brothers and designed by Frank M. Andrews, it combines Beaux Arts and Baroque features like gilded columns, elaborate coffered ceilings, and detailed carvings. A subterranean rathskellar is entirely lined with Rookwood pottery, and lobby murals are some of painter Conrad Arthur Thomas’ best work.

Today, this luxurious hotel is home to The Old Seelbach Bar, a carefully restored early turn of the century pub. Try local Louisville favorites like a signature Hot Brown on Texas toast, Kentucky Burgoo with sorghum-drizzled corn muffins, and decadent Derby Pie. Enjoy alongside a drink from the expansive bourbon wall behind the bar.

Historic stone hotel exterior at dusk with warm lights, a red carpet on the steps, black awnings, and elegant balconies. The wet cobblestone street reflects the glow from the entrance.
