With its eclectic mix of wacky festivals and unique celebrations, Minnesota offers so much more than breathtaking lakes and icy winters. If you’re a fan of all things weird and wonderful, these festivals are a must-add to your Minnesota bucket list.

From beard contests to medieval jousting, Minnesota’s quirky celebrations promise unforgettable experiences for locals and travelers alike.

Minnesota Garlic Festival

The Minnesota Garlic Festival is the ultimate party for garlic lovers. Snack on garlic-infused foods like pimento dip, grilled cheese, ice cream, and even cotton candy. Compete for bragging rights (and a blue ribbon) in the garlic growing contest and watch celebrity chefs demonstrate cooking with garlic. Enjoy live music and stock up on garlic-infused products from local artisans. Want to get in on the action? Join the public parade and strut your stuff. Pro-tip: You’ll need a strong breath mint after a day at this festival!

Grumpy Old Men Festival

This Wabasha festival puts a fun (and grumpy) twist on classic winter activities. Test your skills in the ice fishing tournament or challenge yourself to some Busch Light Curling. Kick back on a horse-drawn wagon ride while indulging in s’mores and hot cocoa. Sip your favorite brews in the beer garden and enjoy live performances by musicians and comedians. Don’t miss a showing of Grumpy Old Men – the classic movie that inspired it all.

Minnesota Renaissance Festival

This Minnesota favorite brings medieval magic to life over seven weekends between August and September. With 16 entertainment stages, 500+ food and beverage options, 250+ talented artisans, and 50+ games and attractions, there’s always something new to experience. Meet the enchanting merfolk of Mermaid Cove and channel your inner warrior at the Viking Encampment. Watch thrilling jousting tournaments, feast on giant turkey legs, and see how you fare in traditional games like archery and axe throwing.

Bean Hole Days

Dating back to 1938, Bean Hole Days started as a way for business owners to thank local farmers by serving them beans they had baked underground overnight. Today, it’s a beloved community event with craft vendors, games, music—and plenty of free beans. Watch the crowning of King and Queen Bean, play kid-friendly games like the trampoline jump, and listen to a live performance while enjoying your baked beans at one of Minnesota’s quirkiest festivals.

Judy Garland Festival

Celebrate the life and legacy of Minnesota-born actress Judy Garland in her hometown of Grand Rapids. This summertime festival features movie screenings, costume contests, and guided tours of the nearby Judy Garland Museum. Compete in a Wizard of Oz-inspired escape room and play Judy-themed Bingo. Celebrate the actress’ most iconic eras on an unforgettable party bus tour. This nostalgic trip down the yellow brick road has plenty to offer fans of all ages over four days of fun.

World’s Largest Wild Rice Festival

Since 1949, the town of Deer River has honored Minnesota’s traditional wild rice in an annual event packed with music, food, and entertainment. Enjoy the sounds of regional musicians and cheer on colorful floats in the festival parade. Get a birds-eye view from the top of the Ferris wheel and indulge in a wild rice hotdish dinner. Before you go, stroll through the Wild Rice Festival Flea Market to shop for everything from hand-crafted furniture to homemade jams.

Bonus Festival: Lanesboro Rhubarb Festival

Lanesboro is the Rhubarb Capital of Minnesota – and they’re proud of that title! Celebrate like a local by heading downtown for a day filled with rhubarb-themed games, contests, and art. Try your hand at a round of Rhubarb Golf, vote for your favorite rhubarb treat in the Tasting Contest, and catch the Rhubarb Fashion Show. Join an epic sing-a-long and dance to live tunes at the world’s most legendary rhubarb celebration
