West Sixth Street is a blast anytime, day or night. Come here to eat and shop in the AM and party in the PM.
DINING
If you prefer the classics, get a steak and potato at Hoffbrau (which dates back to 1932) or a heritage pork chop at Southern-centric Fixe. For brunch, try the sophisticated seafood dishes at Clark’s Oyster Bar. Or head to 24 Diner for locally sourced dishes like the veggie hash. And true to its name, the diner is open 24 hours a day. Italic cooks up rustic Italian like house-made pastas and shareable pizzas, with a lovely ambiance and aperitif program. You can’t miss the clever signage in front of Tex-Mex favorite El Arroyo. Come here for a frozen margarita and a piping hot bowl of queso. Or pair margaritas with crispy Gulf oysters at Ranch 616. Both Wu Chow and Lin Asian Bar + Dim Sum serve dim sum, along with modern takes on traditional Chinese food. Definitely get some soup dumplings.
INSIDER TIP: West Sixth exudes a fun, daytime party atmosphere, hosting everything from Oktoberfest and St. Patrick’s Day festivities to UT tailgating and crawfish boils. And don’t miss Sunday Funday.
NIGHTLIFE
Bar Peached’s cleverly named draft cocktails are a perfect way to start your night. Have a drink on the patio at Better Half Coffee & Cocktails, where you can get a cup of joe or a perfectly crafted drink. But don’t miss the biscuit sandwich. Watch both sports and people at Star Bar, or head to Rustic Tap for a fierce yard bar competition and legendary Bloody Marys. The Mean Eyed Cat is dedicated to the late, great Johnny Cash and is definitely a place to fill up your Insta feed. As its name suggests, Garage is really located inside a parking garage. This underground spot is a favorite of the super-cool cocktail crowd. Cheap drinks and fun theme nights are the ticket at the Iron Bear, so check their calendar and prep accordingly. Blink and you’ll miss Dirty Bill’s, but somehow this dive bar is where everyone ends up.
SHOPPING
It may sound unusual, but the Whole Foods Market flagship is definitely a destination, with a wine bar and live music. Buy gifts, vinyl and Austin kitsch at Waterloo Records, which often hosts in-store performances. You can get lost in local bookstore BookPeople while perusing the shelves and the notecards with scribbled staff suggestions. The shop also holds author readings and book-centric events. If you forgot your workout gear at home, pick some up at Outdoor Voices, Austin’s trendy alternative to lululemon.
