If you’re searching for a hidden gem in the Midwest, look no further than Grand Island, Nebraska. Home to a wealth of historical, cultural, and outdoor activities, Grand Island has a little something for everyone. From delving into the captivating world of railroad history to witnessing the awe-inspiring spectacle of the sandhill crane migration, Grand Island is a charming town that never fails to enchant its visitors.
Grand Island Railroad History
Grand Island can trace its roots back to the mid-19th century when the Union Pacific Railroad reached the town, transforming the region into a railroad hub as the United States expanded westward. Today, steam engines can still be seen occasionally rolling through the city’s heart – conductors sometimes even stop for photos. For more information on the history of Grand Island and surrounding Platte River Valley, you won’t want to miss out on the Stuhr Museum. Offering an immersive, living history experience, the museum tells the stories of Grand Island’s railroad and agricultural past and highlights the pioneers and Indigenous Americans who lived in the region.
First, visit Railroad Town, a replica of an 1890s prairie town that includes a bank, post office, newspaper office, general store and even a blacksmith shop. Open from May to September, the town is staffed with actors playing the roles of townspeople. Next, check out The Stuhr Building. Known as the Gem of the Prairie due to its unique architecture, the building is home to an art gallery, rotating exhibitions and the Prairie Treasures Gift Shop. Finally, stop by the STEAM Learning Center, where exhibits feature antique machinery, from steam-powered tractors to farming tools and carriages.
Sandhill Crane Migration
In March, birdwatchers flock to Grand Island for the annual sandhill crane migration when more than a million cranes stop along the Platte River before heading north to the summer breeding grounds. One of the best spots for crane viewing is The Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center.
This 10,000-acre nature preserve offers guided tours of the roosts in the early morning or evening. The Audubon Center at Rowe Sanctuary is another excellent location for guided sunrise and sunset tours to see the cranes. Book your tours as early as January because space is limited.
Outdoor Recreation in Grand Island
Nestled in Nebraska’s beautiful wide-open prairies, it is no surprise that Grand Island and its surrounding areas are perfect for outdoor adventures. Spend the afternoon kayaking on the Platte River, or cast a line for bass, catfish and crappie. Eagle Scout Park, Pier Park, and Grand Island Dog Park offer walking and biking trails within city limits. Nearby, Mormon Island State Recreation Area has three tranquil fishing lakes, multiple swimming areas, hiking trails, and access to the Platte River.
You’ll also find campsites for a night out under the stars. Named after the historic windmills throughout the park, Windmill State Recreation Area is a 30-minute drive south of Grand Island and home to six lakes – perfect for a day fishing for rainbow trout.
Looking to cool off? One of the most popular attractions is the Island Oasis Waterpark. Relax on the winding 750-foot lazy river, splash in the massive wave pool or feel the rush of adrenaline as you speed down a six-story slide.

Grand Island is home to the world-famous Nebraska State Fair, a ten-day event in August.
