Colorado: Not Just for Winter

,

SHARE

Colorado evokes images of skiing on powdery slopes and hiking through fall colors, but colorful Colorado has plenty to offer in the warmer months. Visiting Colorado in the summer is a great way to get a feel for what the state is like without tourists, and the natural beauty is no less stunning. Towns and cities that are crowded with vacationers in the winter are relatively quiet and calm in the summer. Here are a few ways to take advantage of the lull during Colorado summers.

Relaxation and Adventure

Vail is a ski resort town with a European flair. The town is easily walkable and summertime provides weather perfect for sitting outside with a coffee and watching the passersby. Golfing and hiking is easily accessible from the town and Gore Creek, which runs through the town center, is a popular spot for fly fishing.

If you’re looking for adventure, take the scenic gondola ride up to Adventure Ridge. With a 5-story tall ropes course, zip lines, a mountain coaster and tubing down the runs, you’ll be able to stay busy all day. Adventure Ridge is a great option for families. There’s not a lot for little tykes to do, but anyone around 7 years-old and up will have a blast.

On the Water

You can’t visit Colorado during the summer and not go rafting. Rafting can conjure images of powerful white water, overturned rafts and helpless rafters thrown overboard. White water isn’t the only way to raft though. While there are plenty of fast running rivers for the adventurous, there are just as many scenic options for families with kids or anyone that just wants to relax and watch the scenery.

Sage Outdoor Adventures is a solid choice with float options that are good for kids. There is also white water for beginners and white water routes for experienced rafters. The guides are informative, and there is a good chance you will see bald eagles and black bears during your trip.

Horsing Around

A venture into Colorado’s nature isn’t complete without a horseback ride. Even if you’ve never tried horseback riding before, you can easily take a guided tour through Colorado’s countryside.

Beaver Creek Stables on Beaver Creek Mountain is a good option for newbies and experienced riders alike. The horses are well taken care of and the wranglers make sure you’re paired up with a horse that matches your experience level. You can do short trail rides, a ride with a stop for a picnic and even a gorgeous sunset ride.

Feast

While you’re in Beaver Creek enjoying horseback rides, make sure to stop by Revolution. This restaurant takes its name from the way it cooks most of the meat; on revolving skewers in a fire oven.

Much of the menu is locally sourced and the Après menu has small tapas style dishes perfect for an aperitif hour. The dinner menu has family-style options and a large section of meat cuts to choose from. You can even order an entire pig if you feel so inclined, just make sure to ask a day in advance.

The views from revolution complete the experience. Your senses will be satisfied.

Ultimate Relaxation

All the adventure Colorado has to offer can leave you a little sore and tired. Luckily, Colorado has you covered when it comes to relaxation.

With 23 rooms and about 30,000 sq/ft, the Allegria Spa at Park Hyatt doesn’t want for options. Despite its massive size, Allegria feels like a personalized retreat. It goes without saying that the service is top notch, but what really sets this spa apart is its use of the natural surroundings. Allegria’s interior is inspired by the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Natural light filters in wherever possible and most rooms have beautiful views.
