Tucked into the southern edge of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, Lake George is teeming with scenic beauty, rich history, and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re cruising the lake, zipping through the forest, or sipping local wine, this charming village offers the perfect blend of lakeside relaxation and action-packed fun.

Ready to plan your summer getaway? Here are 10 must-do activities in Lake George.

Take a Cruise on the Lake

The best way to explore the best of Lake George? By water, of course. Hop aboard a scenic cruise to kick off your visit with an unforgettable ride. For a historic experience, go with the 200-year-old Lake George Steamboat Company. Book a spot on the luxurious Lac du Saint Sacrement or the Mohican—America’s oldest continuously operated tour boat. Choose between narrated history cruises, themed dinner cruises, and fireworks cruises.

For a more modern vibe, opt for an hour-long journey with Lake George Waterfront Cruises. Ride in style on one of two sleek yachts on a happy hour sail, historic sightseeing tour, or even a princess-themed cruise. If you’re looking for something more casual and social, this is your pick. No matter which tour operator you choose, don’t forget to pack a blanket or jacket to stay cozy when the lake breeze hits.

Explore Fort William Henry

Travel back in time at Fort William Henry Museum, where history comes alive and cannon blasts are totally normal occurrences. Step inside the fully reconstructed fort to find yourself in the heart of the French and Indian War era. Embark on a guided tour to meet British Regulars, Provincial troops, and Native Americans while learning what daily life looked like.

Witness soldier routine reenactments and cannon demonstrations. Stroll through exhibits filled with 18th-century tools, uniforms, and Native American artwork. Stop by the Sutler Shoppe to shop for replica muskets, toys, vintage games, and books. Check the event calendar before your visit for scheduled cannon firings and special events.

Ride the Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Test your nerve (and your balance) at the Adirondack Extreme Adventure Course in Bolton Landing. Swing through the trees like Tarzan on dynamic courses loaded with ziplines, rope bridges, swings, punching bags, and climbing walls. Choose between intro-level courses and more extreme courses designed for the fearless.

Either way, you’ll be treated to show-stopping views of the lush Adirondack forest and the babbling Alder Brook on your self-guided adventure. Book ahead during the peak season—slots fill up fast—and expect to spend a few hours zipping through this two-mile treetop park. First-time flyer? Don’t worry, every session starts with a safety briefing and course orientation.

Visit Million Dollar Beach

Soak up the sun at Million Dollar Beach, Lake George’s largest and most popular public beach. Embrace 51 acres of soft, pillowy sands and panoramic views of the Adirondacks. Play a game of volleyball on the sand court, grill up lunch in the picnic area, and take a dip in the lifeguard-monitored swimming area.

The clear, calm waters are great for stand-up paddleboarding, so bring your own or rent gear from a nearby outfitter. Bringing a boat? Make use of the on-site boat inspection station, washing station, and launch. You’re just a short walk to the shops and restaurants of Canada Street, with shower facilities that let you freshen up before heading out. While the beach is free to visit, keep in mind that parking costs $10 per car.

Shop & Stroll Canada Street

Wander through Lake George Village’s bustling main strip to find quirky gift shops, arcades, ice cream parlors, and boutiques along the waterfront. Shop for lake-themed clothing and gifts at Village Emporium, Riley’s, or Sandy Feet Gift Shop. Pick out hand-crafted jewelry at 25 Silver Boutique or Molly Malone’s.

Find specialty foods at Lake George Olive Oil Company or Winklepickers. For a sweet treat, grab homemade fudge at The Candy Apple or an old-fashioned cone at Nina’s Sweet Shoppe. Need an afternoon pick-me-up? Get your caffeine fix at Caffe Vero or Ashley’s Coffee Cafe. Pro tip: Visit in the early morning or late afternoon to dodge the midday crowds.

Embark on a Ghost Tour

Join a ghost tour at Fort William Henry, where centuries of battles, disease, and disappearances have left behind more than just cannonballs. Hear chilling tales from local guides—many of whom have their own spooky encounters to share. Don’t be surprised if you hear sounds you can’t explain or capture a ghostly figure in a photo.

Tours run from April through October in small groups for an intimate, flashlight-lit walk through Lake George’s haunted past. Feeling extra brave? Book an overnight rental to conduct your own paranormal investigation, where you’ll explore with a guide for up to 6 hours during your stay.

Hit the Trails at Prospect Mountain

Bask in postcard-worthy views with a hike to the summit of Prospect Mountain, one of the region’s most iconic hiking spots. Treat yourself to show-stopping views of Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains from 2,000 feet up. At the top, discover remnants of the circa-1895 Prospect Mountain Cable Incline Railway.

The 3-mile round-trip trail typically takes 2-3 hours, but the views from the top are worth the challenge. With rocky terrain and a 1,500-foot elevation gain, this trail isn’t for everyone. If you’re not up for a hike, you can drive to the top instead. Cruise up Veterans Memorial Highway from Memorial Day to Veterans Day for a small fee to score the same sweeping views.

Cool Off at Six Flags Great Escape

Craving roller coaster thrills and waterpark fun? Drive a few miles south to Queensbury to spend the day at Six Flags Great Escape and Splashwater Kingdom. Test your limits on coasters like The Comet and The Bobcat. Drop 192 feet on the Sasquatch and cool off on the Desperado Plunge. With over 100 family-friendly rides and attractions, there’s something for everyone.

Over in Splashwater Kingdom, float down the lazy river, hang out in the wave pool, splash in the kid zone, and fly down water slides like the 100-foot Big Kahuna. Don’t want the fun to end? Book a themed suite at the park’s Adirondack-inspired lodge. You won’t find Disney-level crowds here, but if you want to skip the lines—buy a Go Fast Pass.

Tour the Adirondack Winery

Unwind with a wine flight at the Adirondack Winery in Lake George Village. This boutique winery offers laid-back tastings of award-winning local wines. Order the $15 tasting package for seven generous pours and a souvenir glass to bring home. Pair your flight with a charcuterie board and grab a seat on the seasonal patio.

Not a wine lover? Try a fruity wine slushie, an American Oak whiskey flight, or cider made from New York apples. Stop by the on-site shop to buy a few souvenir bottles or browse wine-themed gifts. If you’re bringing little ones, they can play with toys in the Kids Corner area while you sip.

Catch a Lakefront Fireworks Show

Cap off your night with one of Lake George’s most beloved summer traditions: weekly fireworks shows over the lake. Grab a blanket and claim a spot on the shoreline between Shepard Park Beach and Million Dollar Beach. For the best views in town, book a fireworks cruise aboard the Lac du Saint Sacrement and enjoy live music and dancing alongside the show.

The fireworks start at 9:30 PM every Thursday night from mid-July through August, with a special show on July 4th. Arrive an hour early for a good spot on the waterfront and be sure to check the weather—shows are rain-conditional. It’s free, family-friendly, and a perfect way to start (or end) your Lake George getaway.
