The Secret Side of Las Vegas: Adventures Beyond the Strip

When you think of Las Vegas, the Strip is probably the first thing that comes to mind, with its neon lights, towering casinos and wow-worthy attractions. But just minutes away, Las Vegas’ distinctive neighborhoods reveal a whole new side to discover.

At the north end of Las Vegas Boulevard, Downtown Las Vegas (DTLV) blends past and present, with historic casinos and hipster bars side-by-side. Explore the hot spots of Fremont East District, and then walk beneath the domed LED video screen of Fremont Street Experience. At the Downtown Container Park, repurposed shipping containers house boutiques, art galleries and eateries. Meanwhile, peek into Las Vegas’ past at The Neon Museum’s Neon Boneyard or The Mob Museum.

Between the Strip and DTLV, a colorful mashup of art galleries, vintage stores and indie eateries is the draw at the Arts District. Mingle with locals at Makers & Finders Coffee, and don’t miss the “First Fridays” art parties at The Arts Factory.

Just minutes west of the Strip, Chinatown is the place to shop for Korean beauty products, sing karaoke, and taste all manner of culinary specialties, from super-spicy Sichuan dishes to sushi.

Luxury experiences await in Summerlin neighborhood, 30 minutes west of the Strip, where you can shop local boutiques at Tivoli Village or big-name brands at Downtown Summerlin. Nearby Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is perfect for a scenic drive.

In Henderson, a suburb 20 minutes southeast of the Strip, drop by a low-key “locals” casino, such as the Mediterranean-inspired Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa & Casino, or continue on to Boulder City to cruise on Lake Mead or take a guided tour of Hoover Dam.
