African American Forgotten Landmarks Driving Tour

In the decades since segregation, many of the communities and hamlets built by Black Kentuckians through Danville and Boyle County have been lost. The Danville African American Forgotten Landmarks Driving Tour preserves this history, highlighting 55 of the homes, small businesses, and community hubs that anchored these neighborhoods.

Head to Danville’s 2nd Street to see where the Black business district once stood, and pick up a copy of the Forgotten Landmarks brochure at the town visitor center. Then, hit the road to explore the heritage sites of Boyle County. Visit the remains of Sleettown, once a thriving African American community on part of the Perryville Battlefield. See the Doram-Sleet House, home to the wealthiest Black family in the county in the mid-19th century. And spot the Amelia Sleet Burton Colored School, a two-room schoolhouse where Black children came to learn from 1935 until the 1960s.

A historical marker reads “African American Business District,” describing the area’s significance. In the background are buildings, a sidewalk, trees, and a clear blue sky.
