Boyd’s Tavern at The Red Brick Inn
Built by Canton founder Abraham Boyd between 1798 and 1804, this Federal-style inn was originally a steamboat stop along the Cumberland River. During its long life, it welcomed U.S. Presidents Polk, Grant, and Jackson, as well as General Lafayette and famous Swedish singer Jenny Lind. After a stint as a private residence, this historic landmark was carefully restored and reopened as The Red Brick Inn in 2023.
The inn’s subterranean tavern started life as a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Thanks to its low wooden ceiling and tiny footprint, this hideaway still feels like a secret. There’s no regular menu here—instead, fresh dinner specials rotate weekly. You could find pizza with chewy sourdough crust, fresh sushi, or a fish fry, all made with local ingredients and Amish produce when available. It’s a historic refuge where you can escape the summer heat or keep cozy during the winter months.
