Filson Historical Society

Inside a 1905 mansion, the Filson Historic Society is both a tourist attraction and a useful resource for historians and researchers in Old Louisville. Part of their work is the African American History Initiative, preserving Black history in Louisville and the Ohio River Valley through personal artifacts, artworks, business records, and much more. Tour exhibits like “People, Passage, Places,” highlighting local stories from Indigenous heritage to the antebellum era to reconstruction. Free guided tours of the historic property are available Monday-Thursday.

Accessibility: Designated handicapped parking, accessible doors, and elevators make the Filson accessible to those with mobility challenges.

Entrance to The Filson Historical Society, a brick building with large glass doors and a sign out front. The sidewalk and part of the street are visible on a sunny day.
