Harlan County Beer Company

At Harlan County Beer Company, you can enjoy a pint at the county’s first legal brewery since Prohibition. This 1915 building was a central hub during Harlan’s boom years as a mining town, serving as a dance hall, drugstore, appliance store, synagogue, and Masonic lodge for the prosperous miners. During Prohibition, the drugstore here may have been one of many that sold “medicinal” whiskey—all you needed was a prescription.

After 15 years sitting vacant, the building on the courthouse square has now been beautifully restored into a spacious beer hall. Under rustic posts and wheel chandeliers, you’ll enjoy hearty burgers and loaded mac n’ cheese alongside a kölsch or IPA from the onsite brewery.

A three-story cream-colored historic building with large windows sits on a quiet street corner under a clear blue sky. The sidewalk is empty, and sunlight casts shadows along the building’s facade.
