Harriet Beecher Stowe Museum

In Old Washington, this unique museum inside the historic Marshall Key House explores both slavery and the woman who contributed to its downfall. On a 1830s visit to this home, schoolteacher Harriet Beecher Stowe witnessed the harsh conditions of the enslaved people working there. The experience helped inform her famous book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which galvanized the abolition movement among white Northerners. Surrounded by period furnishings and artifacts, learn about the Key family, Mrs. Stowe’s life and work, and the history of slavery in Kentucky. Guided tours are available seasonally by appointment.

Accessibility: The historic nature of the house may provide challenges for those with mobility concerns.
