Hotel Metropolitan
A Paducah landmark that once offered a safe haven for Black travelers during segregation, Hotel Metropolitan celebrates and preserves African American music and culture. Opened in 1908 by Ms. Maggie Steed, this hotel welcomed legends like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Thurgood Marshall—even earning a place in the Green Book and on the Chitlin’ Circuit. Today, it’s a museum filled with original memorabilia and powerful stories of resilience. Whether you’re a history buff or just curious, a visit here offers an unforgettable glimpse into the triumphs and challenges of African American trailblazers in music, culture, and civil rights. Tours are available by appointment only.
Accessibility: The museum has an accessible ramp to the front door, and efforts have been made for greater access wherever possible. Due to the historic nature of the building, some areas are only accessible via stairs.
