Kentucky Coal Museum

Once the Benham Company Store, the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum now houses four floors of exhibits that tell the story of coal mining in Benham through artifacts, photos, and memorabilia. You’ll spot recreations of coal camp housing, a barbershop, a classroom, and the camp hospital. The mezzanine includes an exhibit that focuses on the Black experience in the mine and camp. In the basement, a mock coal mine gives you a sense of what it was really like to work the seam, buried deep underground. Stay overnight at the nearby Benham Schoolhouse Inn, a historic 1920s schoolhouse that once served as a school for the coal miners’ children.

Accessibility: The Kentucky Coal Museum is ADA-accessible, with a ramp leading to the front door and an elevator between floors.

A three-story red brick building with large glass windows and green awnings, including a stairway on the left side. A green picnic table sits on the sidewalk in front, and trees are reflected in the windows.
