Portal #31 Coal Mine

Discover the life of early 20th-century coal miners at Portal #31 Coal Mine in Lynch—once the world’s largest coal camp. About 25% of the 10,000 residents of this company town were Black, and the mine desegregated long before widespread integration. Take a mine car deep underground where animatronic characters and an informative narration reveal mining life and the experiences of Black miners. Bring a jacket—it gets cool underground! You can also see a 1920s lamphouse, bathhouse, train depot, and museum.

Accessibility: This attraction is generally accessible. There is a small step down from the sidewalk to the mine car.

An indoor museum exhibit displays informational panels about surface and underground mining methods, with diagrams and text mounted on metal grids against a concrete wall. Metal railings separate the exhibit from the walkway.
