Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill
Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill preserves the legacy of a community founded in 1808 by the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Coming. The Shakers practiced pacifism, equality across race and gender, and opposed slavery, at times purchasing freedom for enslaved individuals who then joined the community.
Today, the site features 34 restored buildings across 3,000 acres. At the Historic Centre, exhibits, demonstrations, and behind-the-scenes experiences highlight Shaker craftsmanship, music, and daily life, including access to a 10,000-piece collection. The Farm showcases agricultural innovation, where visitors can meet farmers, learn traditional techniques, and see heritage animals. The Preserve offers more than 40 miles of trails through prairies, streams, and woodlands.
Guests can extend their visit with an overnight stay at the Inn, where rooms, suites, and private cottages are spread across 13 historic buildings. Dining is available at The Trustees’ Table, known for seasonal, locally sourced dishes served in a family-style setting.
Accessibility: Due to the historic nature of the site, some areas include gravel paths, uneven sidewalks, and limited access to upper floors. Guests using wheelchairs or walkers may encounter challenges navigating the grounds. With advance notice, staff can help arrange alternative experiences designed to improve accessibility.
