Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks

A visit to Tarpon Springs is like stepping into Greece and you can experience this community’s Greek-American culture through the food and sites. Pick up fresh Baklava at one of the bakeries or sit down for an authentic Greek meal (the flaming cheese, Saganaki, is always a delicious choice). Tour Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral to see the ornate interior. And if you’re here in January, don’t miss the annual Epiphany celebration – it’s the largest Greek Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemisphere.

No visit to Tarpon Springs is complete without exploring the sponge docks. Set along the Anclote River, the sponge docks are packed with shops selling natural sponges and mom and pop restaurants. Take a selfie with the iconic statue of a sponge diver and learn more about the history of the area on a boat excursion.

A person wearing a traditional diving suit is sitting on a boat surrounded by hanging sea sponges. The background shows water and parts of the boat. The individual has a beard and is smiling slightly.
