Travel light, Beautiful– 5 tips for looking good and packing light

During your travels, you will see some of the most beautiful sites in the world. You want to look your best when you take selfies in Paris and Instagram Tokyo. Here are a few tips to keep you looking fresh.

Don’t bring your hair straightener

My roommates and I in Italy were eating breakfast one morning when we heard an explosion from the bathroom. It was our friend’s hair dryer. She was fine but her dryer was fried. Even with converter boxes and plugs, you still run the risk of damaging your straightener, curling iron and hair dryer when you bring them across seas. These are also bulky items that you can do without. Invest in a low maintenance hair cut before your trip and pack hair ties and bobby pins, they’re lighter than a straighteners and will get your hair out of your face for the perfect selfie. If you absolutely cannot do without, wait until you land to buy a cheap flat iron or hair dryer. When you’re ready to leave, donate it or toss it– you want as much room as possible for souvenirs.

Drink Water

I hiked for over 3 hours and was almost to the top of Mt. Sainte-Victoire in Vauvenargues, France when I gave up and turned around. I was out of water and so thirsty my only thought was getting back to the fountain at the bottom of the mountain. Water keeps your skin (and you) hydrated and happy. It’s easy to overlook water in the excitement of traveling. Sometimes restrooms are hard to come by and in some countries, water isn’t included at restaurants with your meal. It’s tempting to skip water and buy a local drink but make sure to budget for ample water especially in countries where the drinking water isn’t safe. Your skin will thank you.

Minimal Makeup

Knowing you look good boosts your confidence and helps you get that perfect picture. You don’t have to forego makeup completely but you don’t need to bring your entire vanity either. Find a cheap powdered foundation that you like. Airplanes tend to separate liquid foundations. Powder also helps keep your face from looking greasy. Then choose one feature you like and bring a makeup item along to emphasize it. Mascara or a brow pen is great for eyes. Your favorite lip stain will emphasize your lips. A blush or bronzer is perfect for your cheeks. Whatever you choose, keep it simple and keep it cheap. You don’t want to lose or accidentally ruin your most expensive makeup.

Protect your skin

You don’t want to look like a lobster in all your photos. Pack some sunscreen and a daily moisturizer for your face with spf. Even if you aren’t going on a beach get-away, you should bring sunscreen or at the very least, a daily moisturizer with a low level of spf. You’ll likely be outside exploring and you don’t want a sunburn ruining the trip.

Looking your best isn’t always an option when you travel. Take a photo of yourself sleep-deprived and running on adrenaline or drenched from the unexpected rain storm or sweaty and covered in dirt from your hike. Embrace the moment. You’re exploring. This adventure is yours and you will come to love the photos that capture what you were feeling in the moment.
