The laid-back city of Richmond offers an exciting blend of frontier history, nature, culture, and Southern flavors. Whether you’re a local looking to try something new or a visitor ready to dive into the best of Central Kentucky, there’s something for you. From scenic horseback rides and alpaca yoga to retail therapy and mansion tours, here are five unforgettable experiences you won’t want to miss out on in Richmond

Stepping Stone Ranch

A sunny day of horseback riding at Stepping Stone Ranch.

Embrace the verdant countryside on horseback at Stepping Stone Ranch, just a few miles outside Richmond in the heart of Kentucky’s horse country. With 100 acres of rolling hills, woods, creeks, and trails, it’s a perfect way to get out of the city and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re a first-time rider or a seasoned pro, there’s a trail ride for every skill level.

Go for a one-hour ride through the expansive property or dive deeper into frontier history with a two-hour guided tour that takes you along the same paths legendary pioneer Daniel Boone once took. Either way, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views and an exciting adventure. Looking to stick around for longer? Sign up for the ranch’s half-day women’s retreat. Practice yoga in the woods, go for a trail ride with new friends, and participate in an empowerment workshop.

Downtown Main Street

Main Street in Downtown Richmond.

Soak up the historic charm of Richmond’s downtown area on a stroll down Main Street. Inside the colorful 19th-century buildings, you’ll find an eclectic mix of locally owned shops, restaurants, and boutiques. Grab a coffee and a breakfast sandwich at Purdy’s Coffee Co., then head to Gallery on Main to check out unique works by local and regional artists.

Looking for a little retail therapy? Go to The Cotton Market for women’s clothing, accessories, and home decor. Or, visit Apparitions Vintage Village to explore a treasure trove of antiques, vintage clothing, handcrafted goods, and a seriously impressive vinyl collection. Grab a bite at Babylon Gyros for Greek and Middle Eastern comfort dishes, then head to Paddy Wagon Irish Pub to sip a Kentucky beer while enjoying live music in a relaxed, old-fashioned atmosphere.

Currier’s Music World

Guitars on display at Currier’s Music World.

For nearly sixty years, the family-run Currier’s Music World on Main Street has been a staple in Richmond’s thriving music scene. With endless rows of new and used instruments, it’s a haven for music lovers. Check out the local landmark to discover everything from guitars and violins to ukuleles, jaw harps, and Celtic drums. The extensive collection of unique vintage instruments and accessories will make you feel like you’re in both a music shop and a museum.

If you’ve got a broken string or warped bridge, you’re in good hands with Cathy Currier, a renowned luthier with over thirty years of instrument repair experience.

White Hall State Historic House

Touring the historic White Hall.

Built in 1799, White Hall is one of the oldest buildings in town. The sprawling 44-room mansion was once the home of famed writer and politician Cassius Clay and his daughter, Laura Clay, who was the first woman to be nominated as a candidate for U.S. President. Embark on a one-hour guided (or self-guided) tour to learn the mansion’s history and more about the Clay family.

Beyond the ornate interiors filled with original furniture and family artifacts, White Hall’s grounds are equally captivating. Wander the peaceful nature trails that wind through lush gardens and rolling hills, or cast a line in the well-stocked fishing pond. Don’t miss popular events like the Halloween High Tea in October and the dazzling Christmas display in December.

River Hill Ranch Alpaca Farm

Feeding alpacas at River Hill Ranch.

If you’re an animal lover craving a unique experience, head to River Hill Ranch Alpaca Farm. Tour the working farm to learn how to spin alpaca fiber, pet the friendly alpacas, and meet other farm animals like horses and goats. Want to do more than meet the animals? Sign up for a yoga class in the pasture, where curious alpacas might wander up to check on your downward dog.

Strike a pose in an alpaca photography session or take part in a day-long retreat to create wearable art made from alpaca fiber. The ranch also offers meditative forest walks! Before you leave, stop by the farm’s gift shop to take home handmade alpaca fiber goods like clothing, accessories, and home accents. You’ll never find a softer sweater or pair of gloves!
