Day 1: Bismarck and Valley City
Kick off your dino-mite adventure with a quick trip to Valley City. Visit the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and meet Gundy the Triceratops – an 18-foot-long casting of an original fossil. Marvel at the incredible collection of artifacts, photographs, newspapers, and oral history interviews that combine local history with the prehistoric world that once thrived in North Dakota.
Next up – Bismarck! North Dakota’s vibrant capital city.
Continue your journey into the past at the North Dakota Heritage and State Museum, where four impressive galleries guide you through the state’s history from 600 million years ago to modern-day. See 90-million-year-old fossils like the terrifying life-size Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops, check out a simulated seafloor during the Cretaceous Period and explore galleries highlighting the Indigenous Americans of North Dakota (there’s even a replica of an Indian village), and 200 years of state history, from homesteads to soda shops.
Take a break from the ancient world and head to the Dakota Zoo to check out 125 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. Discover everything from African penguins and tigers to grizzly bears and miniature horses. Ready to give your feet a rest? Hop aboard the Heringer Family Express for an educational train ride through the zoo. If you’re in the mood for a more urban experience, downtown Bismarck offers a lively scene with plenty of trendy shops, cafes, and historical sites to explore.
While you’re downtown, grab a bite at Peacock Alley, where historic photos of the city line the walls and cozy, rustic interiors welcome you with open arms. Indulge in a smoked brisket sandwich or a hearty bowl of Cajun pasta. Looking for a quirky dining experience? Try Space Aliens Grill & Bar, an out-of-this-world eatery with alien sculptures and a domed ceiling that displays views of outer space. For a real treat, order the Martian Munchies, crispy seasoned strips of pork topped with BBQ sauce. They’re a crowd-pleaser!
