Staff Picks: Best Taquerias in Texas

Tacos are serious business in Texas. Everyone has a favorite Taqueria, taco truck or even gas station taco spot. Here are some of the Places.Travel crew’s tried and true taquerias.

Dallas

Tacos La Banqueta

1305 N Carroll Ave, Dallas, TX 75204

If you’re looking for the real deal, this is the place to go. Try the half-fold quesadillas smothered in cilantro and onion for a mind-blowing food experience.

Maskaras Mexican Grill

2423 W Kiest Blvd, Dallas, TX 75233

Tired of the traditional Mexican restaurant decorations, the owner of Maskaras decorated the restaurant a little differently, covering the walls in luchador paraphernalia.

You can’t go wrong with one of the traditional street tacos. They also serve up some incredible “elevated” tacos like the “Texas,” a savory chicken taco topped with elote– Mexican grilled corn.

Barbacoa Agave & Seafood Restaurant

4525 Maple Ave, Dallas, TX 75219

Barbacoa serves up true Mexican tacos (what Americans call street tacos) plus soups and other greatness for pennies– you can’t ask for more than that.

San Antonio

Carmelitas

2218 Broadway St, San Antonio, TX 78215

Carmelitas doesn’t look like much from the outside but venture in and you’ll find delicious breakfast tacos, friendly service and an ambiance that somehow makes you feel at home.

Lulas

115 E Travis St #104, San Antonio, TX 78205

Head here in the morning. The breakfast tacos are incredibly cheap (and incredibly good.) In the morning hustle and bustle of work in Downtown San Antonio, this hidden restaurant feeds all walks of life with their hearty tex-mex and traditional breakfast taco options. It’s difficult to find if you’re not paying attention but it’s worth the hunt.

Chela’s Tacos

5231 Broadway St #117, Alamo Heights, TX 78209

Chela’s Tacos are all around goodness and more Mex than Tex. This place tends to garner and nurture regulars but everyone is always welcomed with a warm hello from the owner, who usually works the register.

Aside from their brick and mortar location, Chela’s runs a taco truck. The truck is usually at “The Block,” an outdoor space for food trucks complete with oversized Jenga, Connect Four, and cornhole. The cilantro chicken tacos possibly the best choice on the menu, but really, you can’t go wrong with any of it.

Tacos El Regio

2726 N. St. Mary’s St, San Antonio, TX 78212

Head towards the strip club because right outside of HardBodies Ladies Lounge is a taco truck that (arguably) serves the best tacos in San Antonio.
