Note: Note: Be sure to check for road closures and weather updates, especially in the winter. Four-wheel drive may be needed to access some outdoor areas.

For some couples, nothing is more romantic than a leisurely horseback ride through the scenic North Carolina mountains. An ideal adventure for couples looking for a unique outdoor experience, VX3 Trail Rides in nearby Blowing Rock offers custom horseback riding excursions led by an experienced guide, year-round. The trails at Moses Cone Park are lovely, peaceful, and scenic. Couples will enjoy their romantic ride through the woods.

Couples looking for a romantic wintertime activity may want to strap on their skates at one of the region’s three outdoor ice rinks. Head out on the ice after dark for an extraordinary experience; take a lesson with your partner, gliding hand-in-hand on the ice, share some hot chocolate and warm up together by the bonfire. What could be more romantic than holding hands as you glide across the ice in the brisk mountain air? Theatre lovers are sure to find a show at the historic Appalachian Theater a unique and special date-night experience. Looking for a date night that’s a little unexpected — and a lot adventurous? Then head out to Elwood’s Hatchet House, for a uniquely fun night out. You guessed it: throwing hatchets. A cozy, casual tavern with fantastic beer, great food, and fun games, Elwood’s is one of those “you’ll never believe what we’re doing right now!” Instagramable moments to capture and share with friends.

The High Country is known for its incredible, award-winning breweries — and the Lost Province Brewing Company is one of the best. Take a break from strolling down Boone’s historic King Street and stop in at this cozy, eclectic spot for a tantalizing taste of what’s on tap. A great place to enjoy some of the area’s best brews while exploring downtown, they even have a heated, enclosed porch so you can stay warm while sipping and soaking up the sunset views with your significant other.
